I dont own a treadmill or a gym membership so my only option is to run outdoors. Its very important if you run alone to always carry something like pepper spray or mace. Check your local laws on carrying this stuff. I carry it on each and every one of my runs. If you cant find it locally you can get it online. I couldnt find it anywhere in my town, I ended up ordering this one from amazon.com  Ive tested it several times but I have not had to use directly on a person or animal. My last run I did unlock it and do a test spray at a pitbull who jumped out of her yard. But I did it to the side of me, not towards her. She backed off and I walked away. If you are going to purchase pepper spray please use caution in storing it if you have children in the house. I keep mine in a high locked cabnet. Also when you test spray it or if you end up having to spray it at an attacker dont touch your face, dont wipe your sweat away. The first time I had to unlock my spray during a run it was against a dog who came after me, I yelled for the owner (who was outside, ignoring my screaming until I threatend to mace her $@%$ing dog) I unlocked my mace and the owner came for the dog. I locked it back up and stuck it into my bra, wiped my face trying to calm myself down and it started burning. Oh crap that hurt!! When I unlocked my pepper spray a tiny amount had leaked out of the nozel, and onto my hand. So super bright be whiped it with the inside of my shirt. Not a smooth move, dont rub pepper spray! I came home and stood with my face in the shower for at least half an hour. It continued to burn for a long while after that.

I also recommend any runner to bring a cel phone with them, road ID  and take a self defense class. I will be the first to admit I have never taken a self defense class, but I absolutly need to!
